Scholarly position

This book treats the mind as a phenomenon of living, embodied and socially situated organisms. It rejects both eliminative shortcuts according to which psychological or experiential descriptions are dispensable and unconstrained dual-level storytelling in which neural and mental terms are placed side by side without bridge principles. Its governing method is integrative pluralism: explanations are coordinated across mechanism, computation, behaviour, experience, development, social ecology and normativity.

The figures are conceptual maps. They simplify spatial relationships and compress processes occurring across different timescales. A labelled arrow may denote anatomical projection, functional influence, information flow or feedback; the caption and chapter text determine which interpretation is intended. Readers should never infer direct causation merely from proximity, colour or activation.

EVIDENCE HIERARCHY

Priority is given to converging peer-reviewed evidence, major syntheses, well-established primary studies and authoritative scholarly monographs. Contested theories are identified as such. The publication year 2026 describes this edition, not a claim that every citation is the newest available.

Limits

• This volume is an educational synthesis, not a clinical diagnostic manual.
• Group-level neuroscience does not determine an individual person’s capacities, identity or prognosis.
• Mechanistic findings do not by themselves settle ethical, legal or metaphysical questions.
